Avoiding Mean Square Error Bias in Designed Experiments

ثبت نشده
چکیده

The error in a designed experiment, σ2, is the natural variation in the response when one of the experimental combinations is replicated. One important challenge in a designed experiment is obtaining an unbiased estimate of σ2. Too often, experimenters do not realize the impact that data collection and analysis assumptions have on the estimate of σ2. If the estimate is biased, tests of the effects in the analysis will be adversely affected. This article discusses the causes and consequences of bias in the mean square error (MSE) term and provides suggestions for detecting and correcting MSE bias.

Investigation of the Allometric Models in Estimation of Poplar (Populus deltoides) Height

One of the most important issues in forest biometrics is the use of allometric functions to estimate the tree height by using diameter-height models. Measuring the total height of trees is usually a complex and time-consuming process. In allometric functions, the diameter is measured directly but the height of the tree is an estimate of an allometric model, which will be more accurate if the cr...

Methods for Extreme Weights in Sample Surveys Methods for Extreme Weights in Sample Surveys

In survey sampling practice, planned and unplanned variation in the sampling weights can result in inflated sampling variances. As a result, extreme sampling weights are sometimes trimmed to reduce the sampling variance. However, when sampling weights are trimmed, a bias can be introduced into the survey estimates. The goal of sampling weight trimming is to reduce the sampling variance while av...

Improving Forecast Accuracy by Combining Recursive and Rolling Forecasts

This paper presents analytical, Monte Carlo, and empirical evidence on combining recursive and rolling forecasts when linear predictive models are subject to structural change. Using a characterization of the bias-variance tradeoff faced when choosing between either the recursive and rolling schemes or a scalar convex combination of the two, we derive optimal observation windows and combining w...

Large Scale Experiments Data Analysis for Estimation of Hydrodynamic Force Coefficients

This paper describes the various frequency domain methods which may be used to analyze experiments data on the force experienced by a circular cylinder in wave and current to estimate drag and inertia coefficients for use in Morison’s equation. An additional approach, system identification techniques (SIT) is also introduced. A set of data obtained from experiments on heavily roughened circular...

Evaluation of monthly gridded precipitation data products ERA-Interim, PERSIANN-CDR, PERSIANN-CCS and CRU over Khuzestan province

Deficiency and inappropriate distribution of reengage station is one of challenges faced by researchers in hydrology and climate science. In this research, evaluate the applicability of four gridded precipitation data products ERA-Interim, PERSIANN-CDR, PERSIANN-CCS and CRU as a supplement or substitute for ground data in a monthly time scales. This assessment was done by comparison with observ...
